I promised a post on my 24 hour technology fast and here it is....
Ok for those that wonder what i am talking about - having become increasingly aware of how my mobile (blackberry) and laptop dominated my life i have set about giving them up for 24 hours each week. Last time we went on holiday my kids cheered when i told them i was leaving my phone and laptop at home! At that point i realised things were not good....
Technology is an amazing tool, even servant one might say... but i realise it has actually in many ways become my master with me always checking my emails, talking calls, replying to texts, even checking the Dadtalk forum... As my mother always used to say "all things in moderation", but in this fast paced world we live in it is easy to go to excess without realising it or meaning to..
So i started on Saturday lunchtime and went through to Sunday afternoon without mobi in pocket or laptop at fingertips.... It proved an interesting time, with my wife and i losing each other in the shopping centre and then having no way to get back in touch (it took over an hour, but we eventually bumped back into each other).. There was of course a heated discussion that followed our reunion about the specific timing of my 'fast'!
It was such a positive time though, i was with the kids alot of the time and so we got into all sorts of conversations and fun without the little electronic device in my pocket screaming for attention...
Its funny really how attached and dependent on technology I've become, but i will certainly be 'fasting' again next weekend and might go for 36 hours this time.... just don't arrange to meet up with me on Saturdays :0)
Anybody else done something similar (or fancy joining me) - we could start a revolution that would scare the pants of O2, Orange and Vodaphone...
Buzz
Technology is a wonderful slave, but an terrible master
Going on my fast again - 24 hours technology (well mobi and laptop) - see you tomorrow 😉
Hi Buzz,
thinking of you...
Today I followed an hour in the garden with some full on Tekkie work (opened a firewall port for my son to use Hamachi).
