Hi I'm just embarking down the path of mediation/court, to try and gain access to my son. Does anyone have experience of applying for shared residency? What are the benefits (other than making a statement that your child should have equal involvement with both parents)? How amenable are the courts to this, especially if my, wife strongly resisted (which she probably will). I previously had a strong relationship with my son and have only been separated for three months. Does it have any bearing on time allocated for contact? Thanks.
The court use the welfare checklist when making decisions;

In court, you can never predict what a judge will decide but plenty of Dads have this arrangement. The age of your son will also have a bearing on this type of request.
An argument for shared care is allowing the child to have both parents involved in his or her daily life as it is shown to greatly benefit the children. If the mother is hostile to this arrangement and you don't manage to agree with the assistance of the court, the final decision will lay with the judge.
