[Solved] Parental responsibility and information sharing

Hello all,

So I have parental responsibility for my son and would like to get more information about his care/health, but my ex never informs me on anything.

I understand that having PR means I am untitled to get information but what does this mean in practice, should I contact the gp on a 6 month basis for updates? Same with the childminder? Or should I expect them to contact me whenever required? (This has not happened so far)

Jmax

My ex is the same. I complained to GP and they said I am entitled to be informed by them and have access to her records. A specialist consultant was told by my ex to not respond to me, which the consultant said she would not and kept saying I have to refer to my ex (who won't communicate to me!).

In the end i complained to the hospital and she was removed as my daughters consultant.

In short I am told you are entitled to be kept aware. In practice they have better things to do than police parental relationships and they assume that the other parent is being co-operative (when they are not).......

With regard to medical records, I had an issue with a GP surgery, with direction from GP to staff refusing me permission to access my sons records.
I wrote a complaint explaining I had rights as a father with PR to access my sons medical records. I also suggested they contact ICO and seek their guidance around data protection.

I received a letter of apology from the surgery and another from the doctor, who said they had contacted ICO and been made aware of their responsibilities around data protection. They said they would send all medical records by recorded post in 5 days and once again apologised.

I had also contacted ICO(Information commissioners office) who asked me to send a letter in writing asking for the surgery to provide the information and send them a copy. I would speak to ICO on 0303 123 1113 first so they can provide the correct information. You do not have to send a complaint as such but just make the GP aware of your rights as a father with PR.
