Hello there, I'm Tom and I'm new to this forum and just thought I'd say hi!

My partner and I are expecting our first child in September 2015 and I thought it'd be good to seek out information and advice when I came across this site. I'm 28, she's 32, and although we had discussed having children one day, this one has come along as a surprise! I'm excited and terrified at the same time, I've had a cat for the past 4 years but I have a sneaking suspicion a child is going to be somewhat more involved :p

Anyway, I'm looking forward to getting involved in this forum, speaking with new people and hopefully making some friends!

Thanks,

Tom

Hi Tom,

Welcome to DAD. Congratulations. September eh......loads of time to prepare......

It's going to be a lot more involving than having a cat (and a [censored] of a lot messier πŸ˜‰ )

Some stuff elsewhere on the site that might be of interest:

Simon has blogged his way through the birth of his two sons. Check out his very first ones for his first time dad journey. Funny and honest - well worth a read.

Check out the expecting section .

And we also have a section for Baby Gear

Looking forward to chatting with you.

Gooner

Won't scratch the furniture though.

And much easier to bath. πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€

Hi guys,

Thanks for your replies!

Gooner, I've taken a quick look at the links you sent, thank you. There's some good stuff in there, and I'll have to check them out more closely.

And actd, my cat's one of those rare as a unicorn cats that doesn't mind taking a bath. He does scratch everything in sight though, although he usually goes for my legs.

Did any of you guys experience "panic attacks" when you found out you were going to be dads? 99.9% of the time I feel relatively calm, but every now and then I experience a sudden "oh god, oh god, oh god" moment. It's tricky because I want to do my best to be supportive for my partner, and I have no friends in my immediate social group who are fathers. I'm not sure what to do. I only found out a week or so ago, but we've already been for a scan and when I saw the little one my heart raced and I broke into a cold sweat. I'm a medical professional, and have managed to remain calm in a variety of limbs hanging off and guts hanging out scenarios, but somehow a few pixels on a screen made me panic...

Thanks again for your replies, guys. Looking forward to chatting more with you.

Tom

Panic attacks are normal - I still get them now and mine's an 18 yo

Mine are even older (except one) - the only panic attacks I get now is if I think, having moved out, they might be planning to move back πŸ˜†

Years ago, I had two cats - one was easy to bath, you just filled the bath up enough so that it was standing on tip-toes and it was too scared to try anything. The other was far more agile - only ever got bathed once and I got cut to shreds doing so.
