2) how to delete your own profile with a view to coming off the site?

If you look at the top of the page, on the right hand side, you will see Private Messages written in blue, just click on that and it will take you to your messaging page. You will find tabs at the top, click on the one that says compose and you will be taken to the box where you can write the message.
Deleting your profile and leaving the site, I'm not sure about, but I do really hope that you are not considering leaving us MotherofaFather. The disagreement that happened today is so rare that I can't remember the last time it happened, please don't let that influence any decision to leave.
