hi everyone!
hopefully these are simple to answer questions that i'll et loads of replies to and advice about!!
I'm changing job and moving house to a new area. I would like to know how halving my salary to £18 000 per year will affect my maintenance payments? I pay, quite happily, just about £430 per month at the moment. i also have the added difficulty of an often violent ex for whom i have no way on contacting to let her know that these changes are happening. my son is almost 18 years old and could quite possibly be working cash in hand and isn't, as far as I'm aware, in any full time or part time education or training scheme. how do i go about finding out the truth about his earnings other than spying on him?
thanks
steve
Hi There,
.
As far as I can tell there is a chance you are already paying too much money, if you were going through CMS you should be paying just over £200 per month and I'm sure even on the older CSA system you shouldn't be paying the amount that you are.
.
What I would do if you are unsure is if you are currently paying through either CSA or CMS then contact them and ask them to look into the amount you pay and give them your new salary, if you aren't currently paying through them, then I would stop paying your ex directly and ask CMS to open a case for you and work out what you should be paying, if your ex is still claiming child benifits then you will need to continue to pay, but CMS will confirm this for you.
.
If you do open a case then CMS would be able to obtain your ex's bank details for you to pay them directly and you are able to pay as much as you like as long as the minimum they tell you is paid, so you could top it up if you can afford too but that would be your choice.

I reckon under CMS, you would be paying 9% of gross, so £135 (actually might be a bit less that this), and under CSA, 15% of net, - about £190 so you are overpaying whichever system you use.
