My wife and are separating, we have 3 kids and I have been at home FT all these years looking after my kids, I'm the main carer for them. The child tax credits have always been in my name. However when we separate, my wife says the name on tax credits will be changed from mine to hers and the kids will be with her staying in our current home, which .makes no sense as she wants to continue to work FT 40 hour week, and then she wants to sort out childcare for the kids after school until she finishes work. Whereas I am there and available like i have been all these years to look after my kids all day, school runs etc, and also when they are off school holidays or sick. For me, it would make more sense when I get my own home, for the tax credits to stay in my name, me to still be the main carer for them as I am there 24/7 , my wife cant be as she works FT. Plus this keeps things the same for the kids with being used to me. And makes more financial sense for everyone involved too. I'm happy to get a house still in same town and area so it doesn't upset school and friends etc and their lives can somewhat remain the same. I'm also happy for me to pick the kids up from school like I've always done, take them to mine, make them tea, then their mum can take them ad have them in the evenings and drop them off at school in mornings, and I will also look after them like I have always done, on school holidays or sick days, and we could share and take turns at weekends. For me this sounds the best way for everyone involved. And I want to know is this possible and can the child tax credits stay in my name and the plans I mentioned above be put in place, if my wife agrees obviously. Just want to know my rights and what's best. There is no bad blood, no cheating, nothing bad happened, just simply ran its course and wasnt working out, fell out of love. And we do both hope to be civil and get along after the separation cos there is no hatred whatsoever, no reason to. But 100% done as a married couple. Thanks in advance for replies.
being cynical, this does all sound like she's planning on making you pay maintenance, and having the children and tax credits to back that up will help her case.
