Will you be seeing it? I'm very surprised how they are going to pad out a small book into 3 films but as it's Peter Jackson at the helm (get it?) I am very confident that The Hobbit films will be absolute belters.

Just noticed you were chatting about The Hobbit. I am off to se it this Sunday and I am very excited. The Lord Of The Rings triliogy was epic, but seeing the trailers for The Hobbit I think it might even be bigger and better.

My elder two are both under 12, and I have not shown them Lord of the Rings - just too long. I've noticed trying to get them to watch things before they are ready result in them never wanting to watch them.
However, the Hobbit is simpler and looks stunning - so we think we are going to risk it... Although I hear the Hobbit is going to be a trilogy - is that really the case???
The trailers have been amazing and the song over misty mountains is awesome it's got such a haunting sound to it. It is going to be amazingly epic.
I don't know if you saw my introduction post but I am writing my own fantasy based novels.
I didn't know that Peter Jackson was going to be remaking The Dambusters, I am sure that too will be epic I will look forward to more news on that.

Yes The Hobbit has been made as a trilogy which is great but I would imagine each film is about three hours long and will probably be spread out over 12 monthly periods.
It was bad enough waiting for the next installments of LOTR let alone having to wait for the parts 2&3 of The Hobbit.
Wow! that is a lot of movie - yes hopefully they are going to make it "quick"!
I really liked the last Star Trek - looking forward to that!

However, I'm a sucker for a nice action movie with some dragons etc. so probably when it comes out on DVD...

Work on a remake of The Dam Busters, produced by Peter Jackson and directed by first time director Christian Rivers, began in 2008. Jackson said in the mid-1990s that he became interested in remaking the 1954 film, but found that the rights had been bought by Mel Gibson. In 2004, Jackson was contacted by his agent, who said Gibson had dropped the rights. The rights were purchased by David Frost, from the Brickhill family in 2005.[6] Stephen Fry is writing the script of the film.[7] It will be distributed by Universal Pictures and StudioCanal.[8] Filming was planned to commence in early 2009, on a budget of USD 40 million,[9] although no project-specific filming had begun as of May 2009.[10]
Weta Workshop is making the models and special effects for the film and has made 10 life size Lancaster bombers.[11]
The last living pilot of the strike team, Les Munro, joined the production crew in Masterton as technical adviser. Jackson will also use newly declassified War Office documents to ensure the authenticity of the film.[
Well, I saw The Hobbit this afternoon and can confirm that it is most definitely epic! My only grumble is that if you see the 24 fps version (that's the standard version) then you may have trouble with your eyes a little bit, as they adjust to the slower frame rate. (The film was shot at 48 fps). It bothered my eyes for about 5 mins at the beginning but after that they were fine. If you see the Imax version, then you will see it in it's native fps and should have no problems (but don't hold me to that.)
There are a lot of surprises in the film and the scale is on a par with the previous LOTR epics. There are some superb charcters and some truly magnificent scenes and one in particular almost choked me up, purely due to it's splendor. It really was that amazing.
Go see it and enjoy film making at it's best.

Many thanks for the info re the Dambusters remake. That sounds absolutely amazing, the original film was great and I can only imagine that with Peter Jackson at the helm of a remake that it will be a brilliant film and I am now very excited by this prospect.
I am also very pleased to hear that Mel Gibson dropped the rights to the movie. No disrespect to the man, he has made some very good films but he does have a habit of not being historically correct plus I would be very annoyed if he cast himself as Wing Commander Guy Gibson.
It will be interesting to see who they do cast as Gibson and Barnes Wallis. I will also be very interested to see how the deal with the sensitive issue regarding the name of Gibson's dog, no doubt it will be changed to ensure it does not offend anyone.
Please do keep me informed on any more info that you find out.

Well I saw The Hobbit on Sunday evening and I have to say........ I am very disappointed to be honest.
I am not one to listen to or take a great deal of note from critics but on this occasion they may have had a point about some things.
Martin Freeman as Bilbo was amazing and there were plenty of little touches that I was very pleased with.
But on the whole it was very slow to get going, I could have done without Rhadaghast it all seemed a bit pointless and a means to fill out the film.
The riddles in the dark between Bilbo and Gollum was great as was the moment the dwarves sing "Over Misty Mountains" but I think that would have had more impact if it hadn't been a massive feature of the trailers.
I am now very concerned for the remaining two films
Was Rhadagast in the book? I cannot remember. I had no problem with his character. I felt he was necessary as he confirmed the decay/darkness in the wood and therefore increasing Gandalf's suspicions.
Rhadagast reminded me of the Tom Bombadil character from the later books but thankfully without the [censored] singing!
I absolutely loved the film and saw it again last night. I am hoping to see the H.F.R version over the holidays, money and time depending.

I may go and see it again but in 2D as I saw it in 3D and maybe that distracted me from the film.
Please don't get me wrong it's not that its a bad film or anything I guess I had just built it up in my mind and it just didn't quite reach my expectations.
We went to see this yesterday and it is a very good film and they have set it up for the next one

saw the Hobbit Christmas eve, was ok but the fights went on to long, will watch the next one
Went to see The Hobbit on New Years eve. Had mixed feelings about it to be honest. Didn't come out with the same wow feeling that I had when I saw the first Lord of the Rings film. Where as LOTR seemed to spared no expense this felt a little bit of a lower budget affair. It is about 40 minutes too long. I thought Martin Freeman was excellent though.
Will go to see the next part in December 2013 but did not have the same level of anticipation that I had after LOTR.

I must admit having seen the first 2 Hobbit films am more than a little disappointed. They have added stuff to the film that was not in the book. Its kinda a role reversal fom the LOR trillogy where they missed lots out.
Having said that I did enjoy the films themselves they were easy to watch and enjoyable. Though as someone else mentioned the first film is slow going at the start the book is the same so cant complain too much.
The 2 Hobbit films were great, and the third one has been shown, and it was better for me than the two, though I haven't read they're book version.
