Hi all

As someone with far too much time on my hands I was listening to the news when this survey came on. As normal I started to think of the riffs not included in the top 20. For me where are Dire Straits?

1. The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Voodoo Child (Slight Return)
2. Guns N' Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine
3. Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love
4. Deep Purple - Smoke On The Water
5. Derek and the Dominos - Layla
6. AC/DC - Back In Black
7. Metallica - Enter Sandman
8. The Beatles - Day Tripper
9. Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit
10. The Rolling Stones - (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
11. Black Sabbath - Paranoid
12. Muse - Plug In Baby
13. Eddie Van Halen - Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love
14. The Kinks - You Really Got Me
15. The White Stripes - Seven Nation Army
16. AC/DC - Highway to [censored]
17. Led Zeppelin - Heartbreaker
18. Black Sabbath - Iron Man
19. Led Zeppelin - Black Dog
20. Michael Jackson - Beat It

Your opinions please...

That list has definately got some very good guitar riffs on there,I am in total aggreement with you though mate that Dire Straits should be in there-I can't remember the name of the song but it was about 88 and I will always remember getting kicked out of an Art class at school for playing air guitar to this Dire Straits song -Money for nothing I think πŸ˜† πŸ˜† πŸ˜†

Lynard Skynard-Freebird should be on that list well before they even consider the likes of Beat it.. πŸ™„ πŸ™„

Here's how i see it (mainly from a bass player's point of view) i'm not talking majorly technical or fantasitcally popular, just the ones that make me feel a song despite being blatantly simplistic or just there to pad out:

1. Guns N' Roses - Coma (intro riff) - after all these years i still get chills. simple, effective, awesome!
2. Slayer - dead skin mask (main verse riff)
3. Metallica - seek and destroy (main verse riff)
4. Nuclear Rabbit - The great cross dress crusade (entire bass-line)
5. Pink floyd - Money (bass intro riff)
6. Muse - Plug In Baby (i'm going to keep this one in but bump it up coz it's awesome)
7. Slipknot - Before i forget (main riff) - basic but energetic and effective!
8. Megadeth - Symphony of Destruction
9. Radiohead - National Anthem - (bass riff) goes through the whole song with that nice crisp distortion, mmmm.
10. Tori Amos - Teenage Hustling + You can bring your dog (couldn't decide which so BOTH)
11. The Jeff Healey Band - Can't get my hands on you (intro and verse riffs)
12. Cream, Sunshine of Your Love (all of it) - awesome bass tone!
13. Nirvana - Negative Creep
14. Mudvayne - Dig
15. Marilyn Manson - Get your gunn ("artistic" licence spelling the album shipped with)
16. Incubus - A certain shade of green
17. Fear Factory - Replica
18. Alice in Chains - Man in a box
19. Less than Jake - All my best friends are metalheads
20. Span - DOn't think the way they do.

[censored], that was hard!

I have a very limited choice of music, and half of the stuff listed I've never heard of, but I do have Dire Straits - Sultans of Swing in the car and I think the guitar in that is superb.

Riffs not in the list:

Blue Oyster Cult - Don't Fear the Reaper
Oasis - Wonderwall
Led Zepplin - Stairway to Heaven
Aerosmith - Walk This Way
The Who - My Generation
Green Day - American Idiot
Lynyrd Skynyrd - Freebird / Sweet Home Alabama (thanks Jim for this one!)
...

My point of view on the twenty best riffs ... It's been in my head a few days and still compiling a list!
