[Solved] Is money always involved when playing Poker?

Good Morning

I am thinking of learning to play the card game Poker, in order just to socialise with friends etc. However, I seem to get the impression that when placing bets, money is always involved. Can't any games/matches be played without involving money? if not, is playing Bridge a good alternative?

Thanks

Good Morning,
.
If you are using an andriod phone, look for a game called governer of poker, they are lots of versions of the game, some are played against a computer and others against other people, you will start off with some virtual money to use to play with and they then also give you daily bonus, you can buy extra virtual money but you don't have too.
.
if you want to play bridge again through andriod there is an app called ginrummy plus, it's a similar set up to the poker above and you play against real people.
.
There are also apps you can use through your PC if you have the latest version of software with the app store.
.
There are lots of videos on you tube to explain how to play, one of the most popular poker games now is Texas Holdem, you get delt 2 cards that only you can see and then one at a time 5 cards are dealt face up, you then try and make the best 5 card hand using your own personal cards and the face up ones on the table, between each card being dealt face up, you have the chance to bet into the pot.

Thanks for your quick reply.

I may intend to play in a league for competitions in the near future if I enjoy playing the game, then I presume money would definitely be involved and no other alternative?

Thanks

Hi There,
.
Take a look online there were some pub leagues a while ago, I know my brother used to play in one, If there is a buy in it would usually be low, and the pub it's played in would have to have a gambling licence, but I think that a lot of pub leagues just play for points with no buy in which removes the need for a licence.
.
I would recomend buying a poker set and playing at home with friends first though, you can play for money if you want, we used to play for £5 buy in share out the chips and value them at 1p, 5p, 10p, 50p so that the worst that can happen is you lose £5.

If you want to play for higher stakes, you could always raid the monopoly set 🙂

It was a funny joke about monopoly! As for me, I started playing poker on Poker Stars platform. You can play for virtual chips there.
