[Solved] Cheap Handheld Gaming Device ?

Need help. My oldest boy (10) is going away on a camp for a week soon. There is a three hour drive there and back and they are allowed to take DS type toys just for the drive; then they bag 'em up and give them back for the return journey.

I don't want my boy to be the only bored one on the bus ...and I don't want to spend £lots on a DS ...not least of all because we have plans to do that at a later date. I know one or two of the kids have Gameboys, which look to be tatty old and cheap (quick search on eBay), which is about what I want.

I'm a bit in the dark here. Can anyone recommend something. A cheap handheld gaming system, that needs to last for about 6 hours (longer would be nice). Ideally, I would like to to run off batteries that my boy can change if required. They are not going to be able to recharge them.

How about this mate SEGA Mega Drive Handheld only £36.00 and comes with 18 games pre-loaded. Should cover the long drive and runs on batteries.

My daughter picked up a gameboy for about £10 a couple of years ago, and some stupidly cheap games to go with it - very basic compared to modern stuff, but had a lot of fun with it, and pretty much got her money back again when she'd finished putting it back on ebay. If your son co-ordinates with his friends, they could get a few games between them. I have the feeling they run off AA batteries so any rechargeables or alkaline batteries will keep him going.

Whilst you may not want to spend loads on the latest DSI - you can pick up an older DS lite for under £40 and these are the best hand helds.

There are plenty of available games and accessories etc

If I were you I would choose this against anything else - he will get hours of use out of it

Hope this helps

I agree with Super Mario.

you're best off getting a used DS, failing that a used PSP.

Both consoles can be modified to play snes, Mega drive, nes, master system and even PS1 games.
The ps1 emulation on the PSP is awesome wheras the DS is pretty much perfect to play snes games on.

plus, most of the decent DS games are pretty cheap now the 3DS is out. (which btw I advise to avoid as I got nothing but headaches in the 48 hours I owned it.)
