I've just had a little play with the BBC predictor ...and this is what I came up with:

Sat 12th June – England 2 1 USA
Fri 18th June – England 3 0 Algeria
Wed 23rd June – England 3 1 Slovenia

estimated knockout stage games

Sat 26th June (last 16) – England 3 1 Australia (or maybe Ghana at a push; same result)
Fri 2nd July (quarter finals) – England 2 0 France
Tue 6th July (semi finals) – England 1 0 Brazil
Sun 11th July (finals) – England 4 2 Spain

..they think it's all over ...it is now.

anyone else?

Ratso still think we are in with a chance ?

Same old England, do our very best to self destruct and turn a winning situation into a draw.

Shouldn't our players at this level and against teams like US be scoring more than 1 goal ?

Hmmm, good point BabelFish. The only thing I would add to my prediction is some of the draws will change.

Spain are no longer going to make it through to the next round. They'll get a 0-0 draw against Chile and the final nail in the coffin will be a 7-0 defeat to Honduras, who will play most of the game with only 9 men, after 2 red cards.

Argentina will be beaten by New Zealand in the Semi Final and the winner of that match will meet either England or Brazil (50/50) in the final.

Tough call between England, Brazil or New Zealand to win the WC this year.

Ah! No! You see, I believe England will still meet "The French Résistance" in the quarter finals, after they have made a few basic changes to the squad.

Thierry Henry will withdraw on medical grounds after having his left hand cut off by enraged papists.

William Gallas will capitulate 10 minutes before full time in the next match; sitting down in the middle of the pitch and weeping openly, he will deny ever having sided with the gunners and claim to have been blue all his life

Nikolas Anelka will become a mercenary and sell himself to the highest bidder

Frank Ribery will openly declare himself a German and deny ever considering a life anywhere else

Florent Malouda will move to "Gay Paree" and become a hair stylist

Djibril Cisse & Bacary Sagna will both die after a horrible head-melting incident, resulting from over exposure to bleaching products.

The remaining players will be rallied by a man, known only as Zizou, brandishing the head of 'Eric The Great' on a stick and marching under a 'Croix de Lorraine'. They will call themselves 'The Résistance'.

However, they will meet there Waterloo, once again at the hands of the English, on July 2nd in the quarter finals.

OK - this isn't quite going as predicted. It seems that our new route to World Cup glory is:
Germany Argentina Spain Brazil. 😕

Still, at least we got through ...and, hey, how hard can it be.

Germany: Two world wars. We won.
Argentina: Falklands. We won.
Spain: The armada. We won.
Brazil: Hmmm ...tricky ...I can't think of one ...but we would have won ...on paper.

Don't mention the ... oops, nearly said it 😳

With the group stages nearly over it is looking like a Brazil Argentina final - Maradona is stealing the show again!!!

Hope we can do it but think that referring to the Spanish Armada is stretching clutching at straws!!

Love your optimism though

A Brazil V Argentina final ! Ooh, wouldn't that be good. A bit like an England V Germany final ...but with flare added and disappointment taken out.

I've just been looking at the Spain group ...A little bit of bad luck and Spain could still go out in the first round ...that couldn't happen ...could it!!!

AND ...Brazil/Portugal later today ...ooh, I'm tingling all over at the thought of it.

Well Brazil-Portugal is currently 0-0 so my predictions for 3-3 are going out of the window at the moment! I have a feeling Chile will beat Spain for some reason and they might go out. I'm going to predict that England will (narrowly) beat the Germans but lose to Argentina 🙁 .

Off to my sisters with the family this afternoon, for a WC BBQ. She's got a bigger TV than we have ...and she does better barbies!

Today's prediction is ...a 7-0 drubbing with Rooney netting a double hat-trick. Later, Argentina score a single goal in extra time to narrowly beat Mexico.

Roll on the quarters!!!

Yeah, I dunno what went wrong there! It makes no sense!

As for Germany/Argentina. Gotta go for Argentina as being the least flaky of the two. And I still quite fancy watching Brazil/Argentina in the final.

I'm going for Argentina as well; the Germans are good but I think the Argentines will have too much experience for them. Then again, I said that about England!

OK, this is what I've worked out:

Rooney is not alone in woefully underperforming at this years WC. Also, Ribery, Anelka, Torres, Ronaldo, Kaka, ...

England did actually make it to the last 16, unlike France and Italy.

...and, much like Germany and Spain, they were reliant on a decent performance in their last group match to battle into the last 16.

The USA who topped our group, technically went out of the competition before us (by several hours) and to (arguably) lesser opposition.

England are in good company, going out in the last 16, along with Portugal.

...and, of course, Rooney didn't stamp on anyone's testicles, nor did any of our players kick an opposition team member in a girly fashion.

I mean, all things considered, you could argue that we have actually had quite a good tournament 😕

I love your optimism Ratso! When you put it like that, it doesn't seem so bad but you could also say that Ghana got further than us and they didn't even have their best player in Essien. Getting to the quarter finals in previous tournaments was seen as a failure but it means that we were among the top eight teams in the world, is that so very bad?

...and just to continue with my earlier post about how well England actually did at the WC

Another under-performance from Messi ...greatest player on the planet.

The great Argentina and the even greater Brazil both left the tournament just one game later then England

Argentina thrashed 4-0 by Germany. At least we held them to 4-2 (morally)

You know the more I think about this, the more I think maybe we had a great tournament. Give me another couple of weeks and I'll convince myself we won 🙂

I agree Ratso, maybe positive thinking is the way to go. Argentina get beaten 4-0 and they get a hero's welcome on their return to Argentina and our boys have to slink off through a back entrance because they didn't want to be heckled by the fans!

You mentioned Messi, but what is up with the top players not performing? Rooney, Torres, Ronaldo, Kaka and the list goes on.

Wesley Sneijder is on the verge of doing something even the greatest players in the world, like Zidane, never did: win their league, the Champions League, a domestic cup, and the World Cup all in the same year - If Holland win.

What an achievement that would be. 😀

...and the talk today is that Man U are trying to buy Sneijder
...also heard that Arsenal want Ozil. Don't know if there's any truth in that one, but it sounds quite exciting.

I'm sure I heard the other day that IF the Netherlands win, they will have won every single game they have played throughout the campaign; right from the start of the qualifiers. That has to be pretty cool. Has anyone ever done that before?

I would have loved to have seen Germany/Netherlands in the final. As for Spain/Netherlands ...I have no idea. I guess Spain remain the favourites and their playing, at times, is sublime. But what a fairytale come true if the Netherlands nab it.

...anyway, it turns out that I am not as good as an octopus at predicting games, which I find a bit hard to take 😕
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/10521867.stm

I no longer feel qualified to comment on the outcome. So instead I will go and ask my hamster. I will get two nuts and draw an 'S' on one and an 'N' on the other and see which she decides to eat. She's asleep at the moment, so I will wait until she wakes and let you know the (predicted) result later.

Anyone else got any animals they can try this with. Lets see some of that British grit. Lets stand up for ourselves and not be outdone by a German octopus.

[walks off to kitchen to look for bag of nuts, singing Dam Busters theme tune "DAN, DAN, DAN, DA, DA, DA, DA, DA, ..."]

OK - the hamster has spoken. Presented with two nuts, one with an 'N' and one with an 'S', she chose the 'N' nut. Looks like the Netherlands are going to win on Sunday.

Nil - Nil Spain to win on penalties.

Both defensive teams will put up the shutters and it will be a dull game.

We will all spend the next two years considering whether England will win the Euros whilst collecting flags to deliver to Actd ready for the start of the tournament

Nearly right Mario - almost made it to penalties.

And harveys dad as well. 😉

Ha! Turns out the octopus is a fraud!

I should sue, for the therapy my hamster is currently having to undergo, as a result of this deception.

Slightly more difficult to stomach is this Argentinian ruse. Yuk! http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/ne ... ttack.html
