[Solved] Which football team should my son support?

Okay, so my sons only just turned 5 but its nearly time for me to decide which way to lead him when it comes to supporting a football team. I have always been a Liverpool fan which was fine in the 80's and early 90's but now it isn't quite as fun. Also, I wouldn't recognise half the players if they walked passed me in the street.

So, the question is, who should I encourgae him to support? And why? A premier league team? Our local team? Personally I would prefer a premier league team so he doesn't feel like an idiot going to school or turning up to footie practice wearing a Bedford Town shirt! (unfortunately they are our local team) In fact, I don't even know if they sell Bedford Town shirts!

Anyway, what are your thoughts and why?

It's got to be LFC - with Kenny at the reins and Carroll and Suarez in the team, what could possibly go wrong!

The unwritten rule is they should support the same team as Dad - so Liverpool it is!!

My son is the only Liverpool fan in his class and gets loads of stick from his Chelsea, Spurs and Arsenal friends. His only consolation is that his teacher supports Newcastle!!!

Obviously the only choice is the mighty gunners.

A team that plays beautiful football and aspires to true greatness. A team who plays football, the way all supporters would like to see their team play.

No long ball game just pass and move. A club not trying to buy success.

Though I may be slightly biased. 🙄

Slightly biased may be a "slight" exaggeration

Thanks for all your help guys!!!

Gooner, I meant an 'English' team. Arsenal are a european team.

I am leaning towards actd's advice. Rugby , golf and cricket are far more respectable sports to follow anyway!

You are right - rugby is the better sport, however he will be influenced by friends at school so better to help him with his decision now or he may come home wanting to support Man U because his friends do!!

Neither of mine are particularly football fans they support Liverpool if asked but they dont really play. In fact one plays hockey and the other fencing which are both much better sports to play and to watch. I am more than happy with these choices.

I used to take my son to play football, but rarely stayed to watch - if he'd have done either hockey or fencing, I would have stayed (I did fencing when I was at school, in fact).

Haha, have to mention the Arsenal result today (Carling Cup Final) so i could cheer up Goonerplum.

The trophy cabinet stays bare mate. I am pretty sure it still will be by the end of the season too. While Liverpool are lifting the main European trophy (the Europa League, cough, cough) Arsenal will be crying in a corner while Cesc is signing on the dotted line for Barcelona!

Great days!

Hey Gooner

Hope your boys got a refund on the "Silvo" they bought for the trophy cabinet???

Never mind - at least the girls can win trophies at Arsenal 😆

Just to keep you all updated on the issue of which football team my son should support, I decided to be unapologetic in getting him to support Liverpool (especially as King Kenny is back in charge!) but unfortunately for some reason he's dead set on supporting Chelsea.

Please help me decide what the best punishment for him should be. I was thinking of grounding him for a year, stopping his pocket money or even 50 lashes with a cat o' 9 tails. However, as he's only 5 this may be a bit much. 😮 Any ideas??

I think you should buy him the kit and take a photo of him in it. Then when he is 18 you should show the photo to his girlfriend.

She will then dump him in a rage as Liverpool, having just won their 25th league title, was clearly the correct choice and it will cast doubt over his ability to think straight!!!

Or if you cant wait that long then just remove his finger nails

Let him chose the team himself, he may already have an idea, that's if he even likes football

No Barry it doesnt work like that - no son of mine would be allowed a Man U shirt so it has to be the same team or adoption!!!
