I think a lot has to be said for the managers in all of this. Ferguson has shown his shrewdness in doing all his business early. Dalglish too ie Carroll (but he also left some til the last minute). Wenger only started to look when things got desparate. Why did he wait SOOOO long to see what all the Arsenal fans had been shouting for months??
Would that be because the frenchie always knows best and can't see the obvious 
I think his Gallic pride was getting in the way - ie didnt want to spend too much or pay lots on wages
Time to move on and think about the club and the fans which both need SUCCESS!!!
And being thrifty is not going to get it
However he could have spent £50million on this
