Roger Federer in tears on losing the Ausy Open to Rafa - I guess it shows he's a real human being after all. Or do you think we need strong role models who can keep themselves together?

Good to see a few genuine tears.

Real men do cry! Esp when my daughter asks for help with her maths homework lol 😉

I do think we need some role models that show how to handle emotions appropriately.

Hi

I suppose those of a certain age will remember Paul Gascoigne in Italia '90 or Matthew Pinsent winning his fourth gold in Athens and who could forget John Terry after the Champions League final.

I almost did when I hit a second ball into the lake last weekend!!!

What about sporting movies to make you cry...Rocky for example!

Hi

That's a good point but can you really add paul gazza in that list of a role model, and rocko balboa is a character, and his
main proffesion was getting beaten up to help his family, not the greatest of role models.

I personally think a role model has to be someone that could hold it all together, because it doesn't help if your role model all ways
breaks down in a reck, because if thats who were looking to for guidence it doesnt send the best message out

JJ

You have a point - however surely a role model can be bad as well as good?

Whilst you state that Rocky is not a good role model - throughout the films his relationship with his son is tested and the outcome is very positive!!!

As for Paul Gascoigne - don't be too hard on him, whilst he was a clown he also inspired many kids and helped develop footballers as celebrities. Many kids grew up watching George Best and I still believe he is one of the greatest players ever to grace a football pitch, a great role model? maybe not but certainly a warning of how it could all go wrong

Children will look to these sportsmen to be role models - it is up to us as adults to ensure that they are given a balanced opinion and not over glamourise their lifestyle. We have that opportunity and should make the most of it.

I'm afraid that I disagree Supes. It may be just semantics but I think a role model is someone that people aspire to be like - I think someone who is a bad role model would be an example.

Though I do agree that Rocky is a good role model, He always tries the best for his family, aspires to better himself, works hard, is honest and overcomes when the odds are stacked against him.

Both Gazza and Bestie are examples of how great talent can be wasted, neither scaled the heights that they were capable of, though both had their moments - their careers serve as a warning or example to others of how outside distractions can influence great talent. I wouldn't call them role models. Imagine what they could have achieved.

Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Thierry Henry would be good footballing role models - never let their personal lives get in the way of their careers and lived their lives the right way. You never see them in the papers rolling out of nightclubs in the early hours of the morning half cut.

People are inspired by Best or Gazza's talent but don't aspire to be like them. That's why I don't think they are role models.

True I agree with the Gooner, all though I was saying rocky isn't a good role model not because of the relationship he had with his family, it was more because of his occupation, and the fact that rocky balboa isn't a real person it's Slyvester Stalone.

I agree with you in terms that whilst we aspire to have their talent we wouldn't want to be them - this made me think about what I could do to help keep my boys on the straight and narrow.

It must be difficult on the "realistic" salaries that people earn but imagine having all that money, fame and all its trappings at such a young age?

It seems like a parents nightmare
