I am a mother of four children. My older son and daughter are studying at universities away from home. My other two children, a son and another daughter aged seven and nine respectively, miss their older siblings. I want them all to communicate through the internet so that they remain well connected. Where can I get a safe email service for the younger kids?

That is indeed a wonderful thought. There could not be a better way to stay connected with your near and dear ones than the internet. http://www.kidsemail.org is an excellent option for you. It provides email services especially for children with unique features like parents can log into their child’s email account, parents can get copies of outgoing and incoming mails of their children, and many such features. These will help parents keep a watch on their child’s internet activities.

Hi

I have two children who both over the past two years wanted to go online as their friends do. I think you need to make it very clear that they abide by certain rules:

Create their own folder in your favourites and these are the only sites they are allowed to visit

Talk about the dangers of the internet (we all talked about talking to strangers in the park - why not online?

Install parental controls

Use sites that are approved ie Club Penguin and the other previously mentioned.

If they abuse your trust then stop them using it for a week - they will soon learn.

The internet is an extremely important part of everyday life and children should learn how to use it - they will benefit from the trust you place in them

Good luck

Mario

I agree with Mario's post here. the best way you could control your children is to talk to them in a manner that they understand and follow you. if you will start to tell them about the rules of using the internet, then in time, they will soon understand the many things online by themselves. do not be afraid to let them know how to browse the internet, since internet can give them access to different learning sites. Just make sure to give them rules and guidelines. Goodluck. 😉 ]

My 12 year old accepted one of those pop ups that warn you have 536 errors with your computer - as a consequence it uploaded all sorts of rubbish and I had to rebuild his laptop from scratch.

This was a very costly error on his part but gave me the opportunity to talk to him about the types of people who are out there, hopefully he has learned his lesson!

Another tip is to put the computer somewhere where you can keep an eye on what is going on, say on a table in the lounge rather than say having a laptop upstairs in the bedroom.
