I think I might do something like this for each family friendly movie I see. To start off with, a film I saw very recently that the whole family have grown to love.
Ponyo is the latest offering from Japan's answer to Disney Animation Studio's, Studio Ghibli. As a very family friendly orientated title it sits alongside previous works such as My Neighbour Totoro. However don't let the films country of origin put you off, largely because thanks to a distribution deal with Disney, Studio Ghibli have put together an all star cast to do the voice acting in English which includes Cate Beckinsale and Matt Damon.
Ponyo is legendary animator and director Hayao Mayazaki's retelling of a popular children's classic, The Little Mermaid. However in this particular version of the story, there is no Mermaid, just a fish who happens to be the daughter of a human magician who has grown tired of human life on the surface and its wasteful nature. One day the little fish tries to escape and finds herself stuck in a jar, Sosuke, a five year old human discovers her and nurses her back to health, the fish, which he names Ponyo, falls in love with Sosuke.
Events transpire that see Ponyo returned back to the sea, however she has developed enough magical power to turn herself into a human and awaken her mother, the spirit of the sea. The island Sosuke becomes flooded the rising sea that is caused by the spirits awakening and Ponyo returns to Sosuke. What follows is a tale of friendship and growing maturity, plus witnessing the learning processes of young minds in a magical tale from a master story teller.
The animation, creatures and world created by Mayazaki and his team will have children and adults alike enthralled from start to finish and the story and why things are happening are simple enough for everyone of any age to enjoy. Never does Miyazaki feel he has to resort to cheap story telling tricks or crude jokes to keep his audience entertained unlike most Western directors of children's movies, instead he offers the the chance to let your children's imagination be taken for a ride that they will adore. Ponyo is a must see.
Ponyo will be available to purchase on DVD and Blu-Ray from 07/06/2010
Meant to put this in the Reviews area...
Thanks for sharing Wev, it sounds really interesting, I'll have to take a look at this. Chris
