[Solved] Music-old school or new school?

Hi everyone, now I know this is mainly the sport department of the forum but I thought I'd start a bit of a music thread. The title refers more to how us fans consume music, whether we're old school with the vinyl, if we're still on the CDs or are we down with this downloading malarkey? I'm skirting between the three, some of the classics just sound better on vinyl but my son's been getting me into downloading so I'm mixing the old and the new school 😀 .

How about you all?

Chris

I am currently trying to convert my cds onto my external harddrive so that I can then put onto my ipod.

I have a collection of vinyl that I would love to convert

My kids constantly criticise me for my choice of music!!!

I have a fairly limited selection of music and I don't really care what it's played on. I have just put some of my stuff onto an iPod as I only really listed to music in the car, and the iPod is the most convenient storage for the car.

Mario, I've only recently got to grips with downloading, this converting to different platforms/formats sounds like hard work! My kids also have a go at me for being an old fogie, that's why my son's getting me to download more 'trendy stuff'!

Have you got any vinyl actd? Don't you like listening to it while looking at the great artwork? Ah, it takes me back!

Looking at the artwork whilst listening doesn't go down to well while driving 😆

I don't think I have any vinyl left - my mother still has my father's collection though which I wouldn't mind converting some time - lots of classical music and amusing stuff (Flanders & Swann, Tom Lehrer, Spike Jones, Bob Newhart etc)

I'm in between on this one. One day, in swirling mists of time, I swore I would never download, this being in the days when Napster was a really dirty word! These days, it's a different story: find a track by a band I've never heard of, download the track plus one more ... then see if it's worth getting my hands on anymore.

I still love to go round record shops. Admittedly, HMV has the worst selection. I'm a record label nerd too, I look at what is out on what labels ... some of the labels I know I will like straight away. In the past, I have happily spent thirty/forty quid on CDs by bands I have never heard of previously ... these days that's down to ten or less!

Youtube is a great source of music. I'll watch a video by a band I like, then look at the recommendations ... you can hit on some real good stuff that way!

Haha actd, I agree, while driving probably isn't the best time to reminisce about the glory days of music! A lazy Sunday afternoon on the other hand...

Imperionic, you sound just like me! When it came to music, it was straight down the record shop and the computer remained untouched but now, downloading is pretty handy. Like you say, you can download a track or two from a particular artist and then decide whether you want to buy the rest of the album. Anyone got any good sites to download from? I've been getting my tracks from Fairsharemusic, where a percentage of the fee goes to a charity of your choice. Of course, my percentage has been going to Great Ormond Street Hospital, it's quite refreshing that you can do something you enjoy and feel like you've done your good deed for the day!

I also agree that watching vids online is a great preview and you're right, I've found a few unknown gems myself!

Looking through my old 12" singles - for those too young to remember 45rpm - please google it!!!

Found some great tracks and now put onto my ipod!

Do you remember the following:
The Look of Love - ABC
Relax - Frankie goes to Hollywood
Temptation - Heaven 17
Shout - Tears for Fears
Lessons in Love - Level 42
Love of the Common People - Paul Young
Gold - Spandau Ballet
Hyperactive - Thomas Dolby

Extended remixes - awesome!!!

Now where are my legwarmers

Old music and new music can happily live together in any collection.

iIm 26, my favourite band since i was 5 has been Guns 'n' Roses and closely followed with Slipknot. Now, there's a massive gap between styles and eras.

I'll usually always go back to the older music rather than the stuff thats' been released over the past 10 years though. there have been a few exceptions (slipknot's discog, Chinese democracy, Machine head, Down, Radiohead's newer stuff, Tori Amos' past few records and a few other reallty decent bands still releasing top music) but there's nothing new that's all that great, tbh, the good music now is still being made by the people that made good music back in the day although some of those bands have lost the plot entirely (like Korn).

Oh Mario, that has taken me right back! I wanted to be Tony Hadley, Holly from FGTH and Paul Young at the same time! I must go and dig out my copies, you may need to give me some tips on that old converting malarkey 😀

I agree with you rik, there is some good stuff out there if you look hard enough but at the same time they don't make it like they used to (unless it's great artists from bygone eras who are still around)!

Just found out Kim WIlde turned 50 this year...now that has made me feel old.

She adorned my bedroom wall for a time!! Alongside Kenny Dalglish! a somewhat mixed up childhood 😆

rik: I know exactly what you mean!!!

Seeing the list of 45s took me right back!! Somewhere, possibly back at my parents place I have a record box of old records ... from memory:

Transvision Vamp (two singles: Baby I Don't Care and another one)
Paul McCartney: The Frog Song (this is something I would rather keep quiet!)
Paula Abdul: Straight Up
A-ha: Cry Wolf

A few more too ... I still like to buy vinyl when it is possible. They released quite a few albums on vinyl a while back ... I would love to get my hands on some of the Metallica back catalogue just to hear it how it was heard back in the 80s!!

New music is mostly lost on me. A lot of bands churning out music these days feels like a rehash of bands I already know and either love or have skipped over on purpose. The *indee muzak* is lost on me. I have a healthy aversion to most of it ... namely Coldplay and the gazillion bands that soung like them.

Oh yeah: Kim Wilde was HAWT (strange to see her on gardening programmes!!), so was Wendy James ...

Exactly! and now it's a dire situation because the bands creating the decent music we've all grown up with or loved for years are getting older, in some cases stale with the exceptions being slayer, metallica, iron maiden, motorhead and cannibal corpse coz they're still making kick [censored] music. I'd love to include GNR in that list there but Chinese democracy was Great, not timeless plus i saw the AXL show live on Monday and it was really bad. :'(.

I hate to think what music's going to be like in 20 years time...

Ozzy and Lemmy will probably still be alive tho, ha!

Ha ha my dad and I had a heated debate about this a few weeks ago, which was ended when I reminded him that
Shaun Cassidy - Da Doo Ron Ron, reached no.5 in 1963
Black Lace - Agadoo, reached no.2 in 1984
Spitting Image - The Chicken Song reached no.1 in 1986
and
The Wurzels - Combine Harvester, reached no.1 in 1976

all of the above would have been based on actual sales in shops so people would have had to make a decision to go out and buy them so whats the excuse there lol

Hey Guys

I'm 28 and i like old school rcok music such as ACDC, Stones, Queen, Beatles and others. Also I like modern day music like Kaiser Chiefs, Coldplay, The feeling and that sort of music as they write there own music unlike all these wannabe popstars who copies the oldies and ruins them, such as mcfly when they tried to do a Queen song. I also prefer to buy from shops then downloading as i always like to see the album covers and you can't do that on a download.

The problem is the shops themselves - when I was a teenager thee was Woolies (obviously!) and an independent record shop which had the 12" singles.

I remember having to wait until Wednesday before the single was in stock.

Nowadays you get it in Tesco with your weekly shop or online from anyone of a number of sites. Or you download - it isn't the same but it is convenient!

There's no record store vibe anywhere these days though, tesco can sell anything they want but they'll never re-create waiting 2 days to get my hands on slayer records from a local music store because they "only had one in and that went on tuesday" or something. it might not have been as easy to get hold of stuff but you could hang out for ages, listen to new stuff and talk to the guys in there, i found loads of music hanging out in small stores. :'(.

...as for the original Q: I'm all CDs. Don't understand MP3s. Gave all my LPs away to a friend who would love them and look after them. Have a box full of beer and cheap wine soaked dayglo vinyl punk singles, up in the loft.

I agree with Rik. I used to spend hours in little independents, flicking through racks of singles. Trying stuff out that I'd never heard of before. We used to just go there to be cool and hang out.

I guess I'm just too old to be cool anymore ...daddy-oh 😥

On the subject of music - I was shown this last week, and think it's awesome - his viewing figures have leapt by around 700,000 in the last 5 days.
