[Solved] Oscar Pistorius

DAD.info's Matt Buttery was just on the Jeremy Vine show on Radio 2 talking about Role Models/Hero's for your children.

Was Oscar Pistorius a hero for your kids? What do you say to them to explain what has happened when a Role Model/Sporting Star/Hero has a very public fall from grace ?

I am not sure that Oscar Pretorius is a good example here especially if he is convicted of pre-meditated murder. It certainly sounds incredible for a guy who had seemingly made it big having overcome disability and becoming a hero in many people's eye

My kids are old enough to know that he has done wrong and if found guilty will go to prison for many years but what about those with smaller kids who saw this guy at the Olympics last year

I remember some of my sporting heroes
Paul Gasgoyne
George Best
Mike Tyson

They were untouchable when they were at their best and yet they all fell from grace

Too much money

I agree, it can be too much money, or a sense that you are more important than everyone else. In a way, I suppose that can help you to drive yourself to be the best, but there are plenty of people who manage it without spoiling it for their fans - there are plenty of good examples from all walks of life, but ultimately, no one is perfect.

And my hero is my Dad (passed away 17 years ago). Always was, and always will be.

I think that rich sports like football need to educate these youngsters so they are aware of the dangers of drink and drugs but also about being rich.

Maybe there's a job for the likes of Jamie Carragher - what a professional he has been and people would look up to him

he can still be a hero for his sport. However, his bad nature will always overpower that and now he will be known for doing a bad deed. My kids would probably be put off calling him a 'hero' to be honest!

I think that Britain produced a whole new batch of heroes in these olympics, both disabled and able bodied.

I agree but they are going to be exploited by TV reality programmes which will give them money and we go around in a vicious circle

I think all sports men and women should be forced to receive financial and lifestyle advice to support them now and in the future
