Apparently the highway code braking distances were based on 1960s Ford Anglia - they looked at changing them in the 1990s but decided not to.
Surely modern cars today stop quicker?
well, only if the driver concentrates enough to press the brake pedal. 😮
I guess that the old stopping distances were based on the ford anglia in perfect condition, so well inflated tyres with good tread and brake system in good order,
I see lots of cars through my job that probably wouldn't stop as well as an old ford anglia because of the state the drivers allow them to get into, just yesterday I had a customer complain he got a squeel from his brakes every time he put his foot on the pedal, when the technician looked he had no brake lining left at all and was down to metal.
Now we aren't talking a back street garage here, this is an Audi dealership and the car in question was a 4 year old A6 3lt.
I think people need to read more about car maintenance in the highway code and then they may get the braking distance to below the stated level.
