The SDKs for both Android and iOS are free, however to develop on iOS you'll need a mac, whereas for Android you only need a PC.

Another thing, to publish Android apps and have users install them from your own site is free, to publish from the Android marketplace there is a small developer fee. However you can't publish iPhone apps directly because iOS will not allow 3rd party unregulated applications to be installed (unless your handset is jailbroken), so you'll have to become an Apple developer and pay their crazy fees. 🙁

If I have some spare time, I'll maybe look into the Android one, the problem is I'm not sure about the Joomla/Kunena API setup, so we'll see.
