[Solved] Changes to Paternity Leave? I think great idea...

Anyone seen the news about the leaked changes in maternity and paternity leave?

What do you make of it? The BBC http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-19925686 suggest leave could be paid for an upto a year...

Sounds like it won't come in until 2015.

I think its a good idea as long as employers are supportive and the benefits are easily transferable etc - I think I got a couple of days off first time and two weeks the second. I would have loved to have spent longer with my kids in the first year and to have the choice of how we 'spent' the leave would have been much better than being told it was just down to my wife.

Guess there will be lots of problems like - what happens if only one partner works? How do we educate employers etc?

What do others think? Good idea or bad one?

This will always be a difficult subject - and I think that it will only allow parent to take the time off at any given time, so in theory this would only work if the mother earns more than the father.

What is interesting is the four weeks parental pay and leave that can be taken in the first year - I think this will be a real step forward.

Like you Buzz I had two weeks off for each child but one of those I had to have as holiday!!

IMHO its Absolutely a good idea.
I always took a week or two off when our older kids were born (now in their thirties) but that ate into our holidays.
It would be great to have some paternity leave precicely for those early weeks.
I remember not wanting to miss out on holding little one.
I also remember being glad to get a rest by being at work for 8 hours a day - LOL.
/O

Sounds like a great idea; wish we had it! I do wonder if all business could afford it though?
