2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity - I'm planning on making a Bee Hotel with the kids to encourage more wildlife to come into the garden. What will you be doing?

We have a bee hotel thing that we haven't got around to putting up yet.

We do encourage birds into the garden as much as possible - loads of food and water for them, and my wife's choice of flowers seems to be very popular with the bees, and we had a humming bird moth a couple of years ago which we'd like to see again.

The design of our house also seems to be an insect haven at the front, so we have a couple of bats visiting every evening throughout the warmer weather - love watching them at dusk.

That's really good - it's such a hot topic that I thought it would be good to create a thread about and if everyone made one small change to their garden it would make such a huge amount of difference. I'm also going to be collecting our rainwater this year as well as helping my youngest boy's school design an eco garden.

I don't get much say in our garden - that was my wife's design and pride & joy, but I did persuade her to leave a small patch of earth unplanted in full fiew of our kitchen window, which we keep raked over so the earth is loose and dusty in summer - we love watching the sparrows dust-bathing in that patch.

What a great idea the bee hotel is and something fun and educational to do with kids. Must look into that 🙂 Thanks for sharing!

I quite like the sound of this Bee hotel thing-I might well look into that.. I like to feed the birds as much as I can and would ideally have a table or feeder but im not sure it would be fair on the birds as we have a cat and she's a bit of a hunter..

Thanks GreatOrmondSt, the bee hotel was really good for getting the kids involved. It gets them asking questions and they really feel part of it. Jimjamsdad, we had the same problem with our feeder table because next door's cat was getting into our garden but we put up a feeder in a good place and she hasn't managed to get to that yet! Chris

We have cats coming into our front garden (they avoid the back garden - possibly something to do with our two dogs being allowed out there) but still have a bird table and hanging feeders - loads of small birds such as blue tits come to feed as they aren't on the ground. Only problem is when we have fledgling birds on the ground, but we try to keep an eye out for the cats during those times.
