[Solved] Test for prostate cancer

Good Morning folks

I went to the doctors this morning and told him that I usually need to go for a wee in the middle of the night. He said this may be an early sign of prostate cancer - I celebrated my 50th birthday last week. He suggested that I have a blood test although this is not always 100% accurate and also suggested that I have my prostate checked. He said it takes a few seconds but can feel uncomfortable.

Has anyone gone through this procedure before? Is it painful and embarrassing?

Any advice greatly appreciated

Hi There,
.
I haven't been myself, but through what I have heard its uncomfortable rather than painful, but not really embarrassing, the doctors do this all the time and they are used to it.
.
Get it done and set your mind at ease.

I believe they can perform a simple and quick rectal examination... uncomfortable, a little embarrassing but over quickly.

Hi Folks

Many thanks for your responses. I am going this week to the doctors and sh*t scared (pardon the pun) of having the finger test. From what I have read from these posts, the blood test is not that reliable? If that is the case, why do blokes have the blood test? The main reason why I'm scared of having the finger test is because whenever I go for a poo, it is sometimes painful and when I am wiping I can see traces of blood. I don't want the finger test to make things worse.

Has anybody had an ultra scan of the abdominal area? Does that give accurate results in regards to detection of prostate cancer?

Thanks in advance for you responses.

Hi There,
.
Just spoken to my wife (a cancer nurse) and the ultra scan wouldn't show anything due to the location prostate.
.
You would need the blood test as a minimum, but the best way to check and confirm would be the physical test. Talk to the doctor about pain when going to the toilet and the blood, this may point the doctor in the right direction.

Good Evening
Many thanks for your responses. I went for the prostate test this morning and was told by the doctor that I it was enlarged. He recomnended that I also go for a blood test in a fortnight's time and after combing the two results, he will start me on medication.

Hi There,
.
At least you have things moving and are getting tested, the results are good these days if caught early, my dad had prostate cancer about 4-5 years ago and he had an op to remove and was health and well very soon afterwards.
.
Let us know how you get on.

The blood test PSA is a good start I think. My dad had prostate but after the treatment is fine now. I am at the age also for doing a test and I think the blood test will be my first step as I am a bit scared of the physical examination as well.
