I think you'll need to appy to court and you will be able to do that without a solicitor. There's a very informative website called Wikivorce.com that has some great information on the financial side of splitting up. Here's a link to their guidelines on your question

http://www.wikivorce.com/divorce/Guides-Financial-Settlements/How-To-Guides/Property-FAQs.html

Some solicitors offer a free initial consultation and this might be useful, the CAB would also be able to offer advice.

Best of luck

I would recommend reading this book (there may well be others that are good)

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Divorce-Splitting-Up-Advice-Lawyer-ebook/dp/B00RM0ZU6A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1444502770&sr=8-1&keywords=splitting+up+an+divorce+marilyn+stowe

If you have kindle on you phone/pc, it's a 99p download.
