Certainly, get advice as suggested above, but I will comment that I believe maintenance paid is not classed as income (presumably, at least on the basis that income tax has already been paid on that income by the NRP), whereas paying for a service such as childcare is an income.

Of course, if you were to come to a family based arrangement with regards to your ex paying you maintenance for your children, then I could see that may well be exempt from any tax, and in fact wouldn't count towards your tax free allowance - would be worth asking Samantha Downes that question.
