Maybe a legal eagle here can help advise on this. When I married ex it was overseas and they told us to have the marriage recognized in UK we would have to register it when we returned. Due to a number of unforeseen circumstances never got round to registering it in the UK so do I have to go through divorce proceedings or is it not valid as we were advised by the registrar in the country where the marriage took place?
Hi there, unfortunately I don't know the answer to this and the information I've found isn't clear. Other members may know more. In the meantime, you can call your local CAB and they will hold details of solicitors who offer free 30 minute consultations and should be able to advise.
Hi there
Like Yoda I'm unclear about this, you could call the Registry office and ask them, they should be able to tell you where you stand.
This information on the government website seems to indicate that you don't need to register it in the UK...but it's best to check this

Contact details of the Registry Office
I would think that if the marriage is recognised by civil law (ie not a religious only ceremony( in the original country, then this country would also recognise the wedding. I would expect that a court in this country would certainly be happy to rely on a marriage certificate from another country. I'm not sure on the position when it comes to divorce though.
