hi, me & my husband are being made to repay money that his exwife received from the csa for their 20 year old daughter, she was claiming for her & she wasnt even living with her. she is claiming benefits and she inherited £45,000 but they are saying we have to pay, we are struggling to pay our own bills, we have an attachment of earnings already & they are saying they will take more, they even threatened him with prison, we have an 11 year daughter to look after, but they dont care about this, why should we pay for her debt? please help

Hi

I'm afraid that the CSA will only change their calculations from the time when they are made aware of the change in circumstances, so if they weren't aware of the fact that his daughter wasn't living with his ex, then they will assume that nothing has changed. The inheritance she has is also irrelevant I'm afraid as the assessment is purely on your husband's income, not on any money she has. As your husband is paying some money, I would very much doubt that prison is a serious threat, as far as I am aware, that would only be used for someone who was refusing to pay the money at all, rather than being unable to clear the arrears as fast as the CSA would like.
