Hi, I’m new to the forum and I find myself in a desperate situation. I am a father of 7 children aged 5-17 and myself and their mother have decided that we are separating. It’s a huge decision and things are not great. We have many issues to resolve and most of these hinge on finances. The most pertinent at the moment in Child Benefit. My income is over the limit to receive CB so we have not received it. As we are separated, but for the moment living under the same roof, my wife has claimed CB. Can anyone let me know how this works? Can she do this without telling me? Will I need to pay the equivalent to CB in tax? or is it different if you are separated?
Any help or advice much appreciated.
If you are still financing daily living and paying the bills, I'm not sure that they would accept that you are separated.
If for instance, she wanted to claim income support, she would have to show that although you lived under the same roof, you lived totally separate lives, each doing your own cooking, washing etc and each contributing to living expenses, bills etc.
I think the fact that she kept it from you, is quite telling.
As actd has advised, it might be a good idea to contact the child benefit Office for advice.
Best of luck
