once a child reaches 3 years old, and starts nursery full time, is a lone parent expected to look for work (during the time the child is in nursery /school) and go on to job seekers rather than income support ....i know that it was being looked at in parlaiment to reduce the age from 5 years old to 3...but did it go through?

(no other special circumstances apply such as sickness/disability) just basic run of the mill scenario single mum with young child, entitled to income support, child benefit, housing benefit and council tax benefit.

Income support can be claimed for a child under 5, as far as I know.

It may still be 5 but from my own daughters experience they will "encourage" a single parent on benefits to look for work before that age. My daughter has always worked so it wasn't a problem for her, my grandson is now 5 and she has been working since he was 2, she has just recently started her own business and is doing really well.
