Hi,
has anyone here gone through or considered flexible working and potentially reducing hours to 4-days a week, for example? I'm considering this to give me a chance to spend more time with the new arrival, give my wife a rest (or give some flexibility for her to go back to work, if she wants) etc etc.
If so, I was just wondering of the pros, cons, pitfalls and whether or not you'd recommend it.
For me, I'm worried about the work related side and that it may be "career limiting" (although my company assures me it won't be) and I'm also concerned that I won't legally have the right to request to go back up to 5-days a week after a year or two if I need/want to.
Does anyone have any experience of this?
Regards,
Big G
Not something I have experience of. It might be worth talking through your concerns with your employer - perhaps, instead of reducing your week, you could have a written agreement that you will take one day unpaid leave per week for the next year - the effect is the same for you, but it's then a written agreement with a definite end. You could also ask your employer to let you know if it is causing any problems - that way you are hopefully given the opportunity to reconsider before your employer gets any cover. Ultimately, if your employer sees that you are being flexible and reasonable, then they have every reason to do the same for you.
