My 14 year old son is nearing Key Stage 4 and hence, has been sent a Pathways booklet explaining his options along with a covering letter detailing some changes being applied from September 2013 when he starts year 10.
The covering letter explains that the school feels more emphasis should be put on English and maths (something I’m quite happy about) and therefore from September 2013, all pupils will be receiving one hour more per week for each subject. This however has an impact on his available options, so, unlike all other schools I have researched, he can only choose three options to study instead of the more common four subjects at GCSE along with the Core set of subjects. Another point they make is that if capable, he must choose one option from either French or Spanish and he must choose one option from either History or Geography. This leaves him ONE Option to choose from the remaining subjects.
He fully understands the importance of the key core subjects but feels that it should be his choice as to the remaining four options (not three, as proposed) he chooses. The clue is in the name, i.e “Options”; only being able to choose one Option sort of defeats the object of the whole exercise.
Has any one here had a similar experience and what are the Schools legal requirements?
TIA
