Spurgeons and Dad.Info doesn’t investigate reports of abuse or neglect. But below, you can find advice on who to contact if you have concerns about a child or young person.

Reporting a concern

It can be difficult to know what to do if you think a child is at risk. It’s important to remember that if you’ve spotted things that don’t seem right, others will have too. Speaking up can make sure that child gets help as soon as possible.

The sooner you contact your local children’s social care duty team, the quicker they can act. They’re available 24 hours a day, and can make an anonymous report if that feels safer. If a child is in immediate danger, please call the police straight away by dialling 999.

Child Safety Week is coming up in June, so ideal time for us to share the shame and tell us Dadtalkers if you have experienced an accident / near miss with your child? 😯

We were away for a weekend with some friends when H was 2 - he had only just learnt to walk and coz we were in a very safe environment we let him toddle round with the older kids. Well seems he had a bit of a tumble over something that we didn't see but heard the crying. Rush to the epicentre to find friends 8 year old daughter holding H up and trying to calm him down.

He looked ok and promptly feel asleep in my arms coz he was so tired (close to nap time) when he woke up 3 hours later he wouldn't bear any weight. Several hours later and lots of A&E coffee seems H had a green line fracture 😳

Our sofa sits in the bay window of our front room and the boys used to love jumping from the wooden coffee table on to the sofa. All fine until J had a growth spurt and on his first jump of the day missed the sofa and nearly went head first through the window. 😮 o o oops: Man i have super speed reactions when i need to, grabbed him by the t-shirt and yanked him backward. Not sure who was more shocked me or J 😯

None with my children that I can think of, but my dad had one with me when I was young.

They don't make them now, but when I was young, you could get a cylindrical battery (about C cell size) with clips (as per PP9 batteries) on the ends - and they were 9 volts each. This allowed you to clip them together in series, and my father did exactly that with 20 of them, and then told me to put my fingers on each end - which, being a trusting child, I did and immediately got a 180v belt (fortunately DC) - nearly fatal for my father as my mother came rushing in and nearly killed him. 😆
