Spurgeons and Dad.Info doesn’t investigate reports of abuse or neglect. But below, you can find advice on who to contact if you have concerns about a child or young person.

Reporting a concern

It can be difficult to know what to do if you think a child is at risk. It’s important to remember that if you’ve spotted things that don’t seem right, others will have too. Speaking up can make sure that child gets help as soon as possible.

The sooner you contact your local children’s social care duty team, the quicker they can act. They’re available 24 hours a day, and can make an anonymous report if that feels safer. If a child is in immediate danger, please call the police straight away by dialling 999.

[Solved] Asperger's, Social Media & Safety

My 15 year old son who has Asperger's is very intelligent, but has few friends, Recently he met a teen girl through chat rooms/gaming. He talks to her on the phone and is very secretive about their relationship. I know he uses Skype and has a Tor browser, which can prevent me using Norton family.

The problem began when he told my wife that her mum banned her from having contact with her dad, apparently he abused her. The girl lives a few hundred miles away and he is wanting to meet her.

He has lied to us in the past, we gave him a certain amount of freedom and were very open with him. We have tried to explain that he does not know this girl or her situation and how he can trust what she says, when he doesn't know her?

I am sure her mum is unaware of this relationship, I am a bit worried about the whole thing and especially if there is an abusive dad lurking about.

His social skills are minimal due to his condition and we are worried that he could easily be taken advantage of by someone or worse still groomed. I am ready to remove mobile and block all social media from him as we cannot trust him and are worried about his safety.

Any ideas anyone?

Could you perhaps talk to him about letting you talk to this girl and perhaps her mother just to make sure that everything is above board. If he agrees to that, then you would agree to him keeping his connections on mobile and social media. That way he has to compromise but you do too, it's a two way street.

We suggested this and he abjectly refused to cooperate.

You could give him the option of agreeing to contact between you, her and her mother, or if he won't agree then he must face removal of his mobile/internet privileges.
