[Solved] working/child tax credit and child maintence

im new to all this so sorry if posted in wrong place..im after advice really ive used the cmoptions site and found out how much ill have to pay child maintenance each week and I don't mind that after all shes my daughter..the problem im having is finding any info on wether I can claim child tax credits so her mother receives that money and if I can get working tax credits as my wage isn't exactly high and after hmrc tax and insurance is taken out then child maintenance it means once I pay my rent and bills I can barely afford to travel to visit my daughter so I could do with the extra income if entitled..i have tried housing benefit but I receive to much for them to consider paying anything towards my rent..i would be grateful with any help or advice you lot may have

Hiya.... so many Dads on here in same boat, including my partner, it's frustrating...

As far as I'm aware, the parent that receives the child benefit is the one that can claim child tax credit or working tax credit. Other people may know more than me.

If travel costs to see your child are high, you can see if you're eligible for a Travel Variation Order, it effectively takes into account the cost of travel and offsets this against the maintenance that you pay. I'm afraid I don't know the eligibility but you can give the CMS a call or have a look at this link;

.....If the child isn't resident with you then unfortunately you can't claim any of the benefits. As 1626 says, non resident parents can get a reduction on their maintenance for travel expenses. Perhaps you could discuss this with the mother and see if you can't come to an agreement to pay a lesser amount to take travel costs into account.
