Daft question but when calculating maintenance payments to your ex partner she will know more or less what you earn but do you get to know what she earns ?
I was self employed during our relationship and she did not know what I earnt then.
Hi
No, you won't get to know what she earns as it's the non-resident parent's earnings that are assessed.
Hmmm her combined earnings with her new partner I estimate something like 150k a year + mine this year maybe only 12k I thought I saw something about high earnings for the resident partner over 100k are taken into account. so I need to know what they earn ?
Hello cartmell
All parents do have the responsibility to provide child maintenance for their child or children. Child maintenance is calculated using the gross income of the paying parent minus any pension contributions and the income of the receiving parent, or a new partner, is not a factor that is taken into consideration at all when the calculation is carried out.
If you do wish to make a calculation Child Maintenance Options do have an Online Calculator that can help you come to a payment figure based on your income. They also have some supporting tools on their website at https://www.cmoptions.org that might help you come to an agreement with your ex-partner.
If you would like to follow the guidelines of the Child Maintenance Service, the Government's statutory scheme, there is also a leaflet which you can view on the Government website providing information about how maintenance is calculated and the following link will direct you there https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/325219/how-we-work-out-child-maintenance.pdf
All the information about your options for setting up a new maintenance arrangement is available in a leaflet on the Child Maintenance Option website entitled Information for parents living apart from their child.
You may also be interested to know the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) have a website, 'Sorting out Separation'. It aims to make it much easier for separating and separated parents (and childless couples) to find the support they need, when and where they need it, and encourages them to collaborate on a range of issues. The link is http://www.sortingoutseparation.org.uk/
For more information and for a more personalised service, you may wish to visit the Child Maintenance Options website yourself.
