Please could somebody help me the CSA have just been in touch with me regarding my oldest son who is now 18 saying they have been chasing payments from myself but all the details they sent were going to the wrong address and none was sent to my employer. Now after 3 years they are saying that i owe more than £6000 and want this paid asap (they also stated that they could only extend it over 2 years). Now my argument is that i was never made aware of this so how can i owe this money. I would like to say that i do have regular contact with my son and would buy anything for him that he needs eg clothing which i explained to them but they state that has nothing to do with this monies although i thought this was what the money collected was for (i might be incorrect on this).
Please can someone tell me if they can do this without me being informed. Looking at all the other peoples comments on this matter i think the answer is going to be negative from these people.

Hi and welcome.

Unfortunately, as the father, you are responsible for maintenance at the level set by the CSA if there is a case open - the fact that they couldn't contact you doesn't stop the liability, and anything you buy for your son is, as far as they are concerned, a voluntary payment over and above maintenance.

I'm curious why they have taken so long to find you when presumably your ex knows where you are, but I'm afraid the bottom line is that you probably aren't going to be able to avoid the arrears. You could try asking your MP to raise a complaint with the CSA, but again, I don't think it will help with the fact that the arrears are still owed.
