[Solved] University student

Hi. I’m 29, and am starting a university course next month and have been paying directly to my ex’s bank since breaking up with her 3 years ago. Got a 4 year old and a 2.5 year old.

Next month I am starting the university course, living at home, and I will be working part time, earning approximately £150 per week. I have student finance arranged too.

Does anyone know if I qualify for nil child maintenance? Or do I have to pay out of the earnings? I’m asking in a legal sense not a moral sense. I may volenteer to pay what I can afford.

It is worth calling and finding out. I think if you are claiming benefits for example, you have to pay something like £7 per week? the amount you pay is always based on what you earn, so I would imagine you may have to pay something but it won't be a lot based on what you say you will be earning.

hi,

based on your income it looks like you will be paying based on a reduced rate:

Reduced rate
The reduced rate is used when the paying parent’s gross income is between £100 and £200 a week.

Any income over £100 a week is taken into account for child maintenance. A percentage is deducted based on how many children the receiving parent is claiming child maintenance for, and the number of other children living with the paying parent. £7 is then added to this amount.
