Can anyone explain to me if my son's mum can go to court and seek financial assistance for our son when he goes to university if he staying with her. She is threatening me with court if I do not agree to pay her directly. I plan to support him directly.

yes it is possible for someone to apply to court for a maintenance order for higher education costs. found this info from a law site:
it is a misconception that maintenance for children ends without exception when they leave school after A-levels. If the non-resident parent is unwilling to continue to assist financially through a voluntary agreement, it is possible to apply to the court for a maintenance order, which can cover the child’s time in higher education (see the section below).
Note that any application will need to be made before the child turns 18. If you have an existing order in place, you’ll need to apply to the court before the terms of that order expire.
