Hi everyone.
My 16 year old son joins the Royal Navy March this year. He’s passed all his tests and training and he’s off to Portsmouth for his first 10 weeks with the Navy in March.
My question is when does the child maintenance stop.
hi,
is this navy a full time job or is it some kind of apprenticeship?
if you on good terms with the mother you can ask if child benefits have stopped. if they have, then you shouldn't be paying maintenance.
Hi, thanks for the reply
My son is joining the Navy as a sailor and not an apprenticeship.
Not on good terms with my ex so can’t ask her if she will still be getting child benefit.
I wouldn’t think she will be as he,ll be based in Portsmouth on afull time basis.
Looking at the government website on child benefit, the parent with care can get an extension to child benefit of 20 weeks if the child signs up to the armed forces - the child has to be 16 or 17, and not work less than 24 hours per week. On that basis, I'd say 20 week after he left education (probably classed as end February), child benefit should stop, and I'd say that child maintenance would also stop - after all, she won't be providing any housing/food/clothing for him.
