Self employed CMS help

I’ve recently left my full time sales job and am thinking about starting a self employed business but need to do some training so they ll be a period of no work or only a few hours.

typical scenario with ex : has good car , house etc and can afford holidays so no worries about child poverty etc.

I was paying +£300-£400 per month which is way more than was ever paid out for kids stuff. But hey-ho. It is what it is.

I am training for a new self employed job and I expect I will first take on a small client while continuing to train and slowly build up to more complicated work as the business grows.

however I’m terrified CMS will use their blunt estimation tool to estimate my wages so I can’t afford anything.
for instance, if I tell them my line of work, say accountant, would they say: self employed accountants earn x amount you must have loads so pay this unaffordable amount even though you are starting out ?

or taxi driver :they might say earn x amount and do x amount of hours per week so you should pay this much?
or how do I declare the income as it rises?
it will only be low at the start.  I will be paid different fees depending on the client so they can’t estimate accurately income on hourly?

I am concerned they won’t be sensible and wondering if it is worth it.

any with experience of how new self employed business is calculated?

Hi,

Yes what happened with me was after a job loss, I went onto Universal credit. Then I started doing some work as self employed delivery driver. I just sent CMS a message in online portal, telling them I am now doing self employed work as a driver, part-time and when I started.

Then one day they sent me a letter in post with a new payment plan. They based it off my previous years salary. They told me if I disagree with it, I need to get an accountant to send them a doc of projected earnings for next 12 months. If not they leave it as it is, and will wait for my next self assessment tax return.
