Hello All,
I am being made redundant from work shortly and it isnt my choice. I was wondering do I have to still pay child maintenance via CSA even when I am still out of work. Do I have to pay from my savings? I am confused. If anyone can shed some light I wil be grateful.
Thanks.
Hi there
I don't know a great deal about this, so I'll move your thread into the Child Maintenance section where it should get a response.
I wouldn't have thought you will have to pay the same amount once you are out of work. I believe that parents on JSA are asked to pay £7 per week in child maintenance. You are allowed to have savings up to a certain amount before they will be taken into account. The amount you are allowed depends on the CSA scheme you are on.
Unless you assets - excluding your house - come to more than £65k, then you don't pay CSA on your savings. I presume you will go onto benefits, in which case the flat rate is £5 per week (£7 if you are using CMS) - make absolutely sure that the CSA are informed when you are made redundant - personally, as well as telling them on the phone, I'd put a letter in the post to then, via registered post, confirming the date when you are being made redundant. One point - if you are being paid in lieu of notice, then that part is assessed by the CSA, I believe - check with them, but I think the way that would be dealt with is that the date of unemployment will be the date your notice runs to.
Hello AdamsDad
The Child Support Agency (CSA) have a booklet, https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/319134/how-is-child-maintenance-worked-out.pdf, which you may find useful. It provides detailed information on how they calculate maintenance payments.
You should inform the CSA as soon as possible about any changes in your circumstances which may affect the amount of maintenance that you pay.
The CSA are just one available option for arranging maintenance payments. If you would like information about the other options, you can contact Child Maintenance Options directly, http://www.cmoptions.org.
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) have a web application, ‘Sorting out separation’. It aims to make it much easier for separating and separated parents (and childless couples) to find the support they need, when and where they need it, and encourages them to collaborate on a range of issues. The link is http://www.cmoptions.org/en/sortingoutseparation/index.asp.

William
