Hi all, I have a query that I need help with please.
I was made redundant at the end of March and received statutory pay, about 10K of which was taxed.
Until then I was paying regular payments of £350 a month for my children to my ex.
I have informed the CMS of all the facts regarding my pay. Right now I am retraining and will be student until summer of 2019.
Do I have to keep paying 350 a month even though I am not earning? I need my redundancy pay to live on while I am studying.
The CMS are taking for ever to reply. I don't know why. In the meantime I am feeling quite stressed. Thanks
I'm not sure what they do about redundancy payments, but if you're not working now, you can calculate your new entitlement here
If it's taxed, it will be assessed so you may have to pay some of the taxed amount, but anything tax free won't be. Moving forwards, as a student, presumably without an income, you won't be liable to pay monthly I believe - I think students are assessed at the nil rate.
I would actually put everything you have told them in a letter and send it recorded delivery (keeping a copy for your record) - that will give you proof in future that you told them
I was made redundant, and anything over the tax free threshold is added to your annual tax bill and taxed accordingly. If you are a student and not earning anything then yes you should not have to pay anything. Just remember through that when you come round to working again, the CMS may use the tax year that includes your redundancy of over your tax free allowance. This could inflate your payments if you are earning within 25% of that end of tax year figure.
DM me if you have any questions.
