Hi to everyone and I hope someone might be able to give me advice.

I've been making a regular payment each month to my daughters mother for what seems like forever. Recently my daughter who is 17 (almost 18) told me she stopped going to college last year but I was not made aware of it at the time. She has also lived with a friend (and still does) rather than with her mother and stepfather and rest of the family for the last few months.

My daughter also told me she claimed for UC and got it because apparently they think she has exceptional circumstances. She told me that she was also supposed to be moving into a flat of her own but I think because of this Chinese virus that is no longer happening at the moment.

Now, considering all of this, should I still be paying child maintenance? There is no order on me to pay it as such because my daughters mother and I worked it out between us years ago and I have never missed a payment so CSA had no need to get involved. I just need to know where I stand now considering all of the above.

Thanks for any help or insight you can offer.

hi,

16
Child maintenance payments usually stop when the child reaches 16 (or 20 if they're in full-time education up to A-level or equivalent). Child maintenance can also stop if, for example: the child stops being eligible for Child Benefit, or the parent being paid stops being the child's main carer.

--- maybe you can contact your ex and let her know about this information, and hopefully it can be case closed amicably.

Cheers Bill.

I think you are right in that I should contact my ex. I just wanted to know, legally, where I stood. I know money is tight right now with everyone locked up in their homes and not allowed to work. I would really struggle to keep paying because a lot of my pay used to include loads of overtime, now obviously that is out of the question because of this virus I'm now basically out of a job until we get our freedom back.

Both my ex and her husband work but I'm sure the law won't care about that or my new financial struggles if she decides to play hardball.
