hi hope for some help my son is 17 next month he has left school and started a apprentership at my work for 37 hours a week (1 day at collage) he gets £4 a hour for first year, my ex has let the csa know my son is in work started monday gone, i got my next pay this friday but on my payslip says on friday they taking another months csa from me does anyone know if this is correct any advise be grateful
I'm not 100% sure on this, so hopefully CMO can comment more fully, However, my thoughts are that he is on less than minimum wage, by the sound of it, so I'm guessing that this might be a government approved apprenticeship, especially with the study include, plus he's below the minimum leaving age (assuming he hasn't done 2 years college and started young) so I would say that's more evidence that this might still be an approved apprenticeship.
One more thing, even if he has left school and has started a job, generally when education finishes in summer, the maintenance continues until September. It might be worth giving the CSA a call directly to see what they say.
its only 2 weeks til september so i will see in 2 weeks the law says at gov web site that any paid apprentership counts as work if its over 24 hours and it is 37 hours of work and 16 you can leave school and he is 17 next month but i appeaciate the advice government web site not very clear its wording is very vague but thanks
As actd has suggested give the CSA a call and ask them to put their response in writing. If your son is on an approved apprenticeship you might still be liable, but with the amount of hours he is working and the salary he is on it does sound likely.
If you are unhappy with their response then you can go through the complaints procedure and if you get no satisfaction, you can always ask your MP to help.

what is a approved apprentership, i know it is through a traning provider .he gets paid for his 1 day release to college but he gets paid also the 4 day he is at work, he starts on£ 145 a week and goes up by £3 pound a hour after every year through out his 4 year apprentershp then after the 4 years he will be on top cnc programing money which is £600 a week before tax. his contract is perminant after the apprentership so would you say it likely to
be a government approved.....he works at my company and got him on apprentership company deal with a training provider.

It might be worth having a word with your HR department on the status of the apprenticeship - there is a distinction between government and private apprenticeships, it's a bit of a grey area.
ok thanks for the advice all i know is my company does pay my sons wage i know it for defnite but i do beleive the company does get some form of grant for taking apprentices on or at least the training provider does but training provider pays nothing to wage, i thought approved training was wage free and had to be studying over 12 hours but i will try what you said thanks for your time many thanks
