[Solved] Maintenance Payments when back in education.

I am 44 and I've decided to go to University in September for three years. Does anybody have any idea what I might have to pay in child maintenance? I have checked against the child maintenance calculator but there does not appear to be any reference.

I am going to Uni to retrain because of health issues it is becoming increasingly harder to do manual work, contrary to belief I have not made this decision to avoid payment.

I have four lovely children which unfortunately I do not see me because of their mother. I have never had an issue paying for my kids even though I know the money does not go to them but that's another topic.

Thank you in advance.

Hi There,
.
I would imagine that if you were to work to earn a wage whilst you studied then your ex would be entitled too a % of that wage as she is now, but if you are in full time uni course and aren't working then there isn't a wage for her to claim against, I'm not sure what if any benifits would be available it's my understanding that if you are on benifits then you pay the minimal amount (£7 a week springs to mind for some reason) I would give CMS/CSA a call and discuss it with them.

Hello Woza

It really depends on what type of arrangement you have in place for maintenance. If you have a family-based arrangement, there are no set rules to follow. This type of arrangement can include anything that both parents agree to.

The Child Maintenance Service calculate payments based on the paying parent’s income. This would still apply if you were at university. If you had a taxable income, they would calculate maintenance payments based on that.

You can find detailed information about how the Child Maintenance Service calculate payments here, https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/325219/how-we-work-out-child-maintenance.pdf

For more information and a more personalised service, you can contact Child Maintenance Options directly, http://www.cmoptions.org.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) have a web application, ‘Sorting out separation’. It aims to make it much easier for separating and separated parents (and childless couples) to find the support they need, when and where they need it, and encourages them to collaborate on a range of issues. William

When my son started at University he didn't have to pay CM, but he wasn't working and attended full time. He was in his late twenties at the time and like you had decided to retrain.
