[Solved] Maintenance once children are past school age

I have been paying maintenance on a voluntary basis for the last 8 years or so, after my ex-wife (we have been divorced for 15 years) decided that "it was time for me start paying". My youngest son will be 18 in the next two weeks and should be finishing school (sixth form) next July. From what I understand I will need to continue paying maintenance unitl he is 19 years old i.e. November 2013, which is fime with me.

I am worried that once he leaves school my wife will then pursue a claim for continued maintenance for herself. She is working full-time as far as I know, owns her home outright (which I signed over to her at the time of the divorce) and has not re-married. Does anyone have a view on the possibility or legality of such a claim being successful? I would very much like to know that there will be an end to this at some point.

Many thanks.

Hi

Unless there was anything in the divorce settlement, I cannot see any reason at all why you should be paying anything to her other than child maintenance, and as you say, that will stop next year. The question isn't one concerning child maintenance so the CMO can't give you any information on this, but it would be worth confirming with the Citizens Advice Bureau - has you ex given any indication that she is expecting anything from you after your son leaves school?
