High Income Child Benefit

If i earn above 50k, and my ex is the only one claiming child benefit (she is only working 1 day and has low salary), am i liable to pay the High Income Child benefit charge.

I only just found out about this, and my ex didnt inform me she is even claiming child benefit. So am i liable to pay the tax on her solely claiming?

Hi,

no I don't think you will be liable to pay the tax charge. You would pay it if you applied for child benefit under your name and your a high earner:

Who pays the tax charge

If your individual income is over £50,000 and so is your partner’s, then whoever has the higher income is responsible for paying the tax charge.

‘Partner’ means someone you’re not permanently separated from who you’re married to, in a civil partnership with or living with as if you were.
