[Solved] Foundation courses and education level

Hi,

hoping someone might be able to help me with this question. If my 18 year old son leaves college in September and then starts a Foundation Course at a university, do I still pay Child Maintenance via the CSA? Does it count as "advanced" education? At the moment he's planning on taking another year in college because he hasn't done well, which means I have to continue to pay for him. That wouldn't be so bad but my CSA case will be closed in June and I was hoping to come to a private arrangement with my ex-wife but she insists on opening a new CSA case under the new system. That means they will reassess me under the new system and this will mean a massive increase for me. I'm not against supporting my kids - I've been paying for nearly 15 years with an impeccable payment record (so the CSA told me) and spent the first 10 years driving for 5 hours to see them every fortnight as she moved a long way away. To put it in perspective, the increase I am facing under the new system is about £200 per week.

Hi there

A foundation year is classed as non-advanced. Child Benefit will still be paid during a foundation year and this means you would still be liable to pay maintenance.

Many thanks, it as I expected. Sadly.
