Hi, I don't know if there is a cut off point or not. If they don't need or want the maintenance you could consider asking his Mum to put it in a separate account for him for when he's older? First car? Something like that?

Maintenance and contact are 2 separate issues and it's good that you're paying regularly to contribute to his up keep.

If you're struggling with travel costs and pay through CSA or CMS, you might be eligible to apply for a Variation Order.

Hello Garlo

Every parent has a responsibility for the upkeep of their children based on their income. Your ex-wife’s joint income is not taken into account in that.

As mentioned by 1626, if you have a statutory maintenance arrangement via the Child Support Agency (CSA) or the Child Maintenance Service, you can apply for a variation. This is when you ask them to take expenses into account which they would not usually do when working out maintenance payments. Your travel expenses may come under this category.

You can find more information about that here https://www.gov.uk/how-child-maintenance-is-worked-out/overview.
More information about maintenance and the options available to set it up can be found on the Child Maintenance Options website, http://www.cmoptions.org.

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) have a web application, 'Sorting out Separation'. It aims to make it much easier for separating and separated parents (and childless couples) to find the support they need, when and where they need it, and encourages them to collaborate on a range of issues. The link is www.cmoptions.org/en/sortingoutseparation/index.asp.

Regards

William
